The Striking Skinny Tie | The Fashion Foot

Skinny ties have seen a reinvigorating comeback as more and more men are foregoing the wider, classic diagonal tie. They exude a mod-vintage mix look that can be really sharp with the right outfit. The skinny tie was made famous and mainstream in the late 50s and 60s by pop icons like the Beatles, who traded the wide ties from the 40s and early 50s (which measured as wide as 4-4.5”) for the narrow, sleek ties that looked so sharp with their uniform black and white tux ensemble.

While the thick, wide ties of the 40s came back into style in the 80s and 90s, the skinny tie has recently made quite the comeback these past few years. The average tie today is about 3.5” at its widest point, while the skinny tie is about 2 – 2.5” wide. This significantly slimmer tie looks very sleek with a fitted tux, especially if it provides a bright pop of color over a neutral shirt and dark suit.

Personally, I prefer the skinny tie to the classic tie, but I’m also aware that it does not look good on everyone. Men with really broad shoulders and chests tend to look a little comical with a skinny tie. Any guy who shops in the big and tall section will probably look a little silly with such a skinny, dainty tie. On the other hand, thinner physiques or those who are long and lean can pull of the tie wonderfully, while looking a bit comical themselves with a classic wide tie. Most average sized men have the benefit of being able to pull off either look flawlessly.

While obviously looking great with a suit, skinny ties can also be worn stylishly under a sweater, cardigan, vest, or even a sweater vest. If the season calls for it, a blazer over the sweater adds another layer to the ensemble, making a striking multi-leveled look. Regular ties, depending on their material, can sometimes be a little too bulky at the knot on the neck to be worn under a sweater, but skinny ties rarely present this dilemma.

Skinny ties are a great way to change up the classic suit and tie ensemble with a sharper, retro-mod vibe. Many celebrities (Jake Gyllenhaal, Zac Efron, JT, etc.) have utilized the skinny tie rather effectively, as well – following their lead seems like a great idea to me. As long as you’re comfortable with it and like the look, go for the skinny tie!
